Elizabeth Smith-Chavez

Ms. Smith-Chavez graduated from the University of San Diego Law School summa cum laude. After practicing in a big downtown law firm for over three decades, she formed her own firm to give her clients the benefit of her years of experience without the costs and overhead of a big law firm. She relocated to East County in 2014 to be close to her La Mesa home and to many of her clients who live in the area (although she continues to practice throughout the County and elsewhere.)

Smith Chavez Law specializes in resolving business, real property and probate disputes, as well as most aspects of oil and gas law. Ms. Smith-Chavez’ practice covers every area of real property and disputes, ranging from boundary and construction disputes to large “bet the company” lawsuits.

She is the lead author of Thomson-West’s three volume books on California Real Property Litigation, and is a former chair of the SDBCA Real Property Section. She has taught numerous courses in civil litigation, real property, surveying, evidence, foreclosure, and many other topics.

Ms. Smith-Chavez’ passion is resolving disputes before delays and costs of litigation make everyone a loser. In 2014, she was named the top real estate dispute resolution attorney in San Diego by the San Diego Daily Transcript, and has been rated AV by Martindale Hubbell for 25 years straight.

In addition to her law practice, Liz has been active in the community – she has been on the Board of Directors of the San Diego-Imperial County YWCA, the San Diego College Foundation, and the Mercy Hospital Foundation. She is a Master in the Lou Welsh Inn of Court, and a member of the Association of Trial Business Lawyers, the Federal Bar Association. She is the incoming president of the National Association of Women Owned Businesses, San Diego. Smith Chavez Law is a Certified Woman Owned Business.
